3 Considerations When Choosing a Moving Company

Home / Archives for Moving Tips

There are many questions to consider when researching the moving company that will move your belongings. Here are a few of the most important ones:

1)   Reputation Matters

A good moving company values its reputation. A good reputation means that people refer their friends and family to them and customers will use their services again and again. Ask your friends and neighbors who moved them and what kind of experience they had with their Utah movers.

You should also find out how long a company has been in business.  It is best to choose a company that has been in business long enough to establish its reputation as honest, fair, reliable, and most importantly, customer service oriented. New moving companies haven’t had time to build their reputation.

2)   Customer Service

An important aspect to consider when choosing a moving company is their customer service. You can get an idea about this when you initially call and talk to them. Do they answer their phone right away or do you have to go through a  call center?Moving company sales representative

Also, does the moving company have a physical location or are you really calling a broker? Brokers will book your move and then hire the job to be done by a company that you might not even know.

What about after your move? Will you be able to get a hold of someone at the company if you have questions or problems?

These are all good customer service issues to consider when looking for a moving company.

3)   Pricing

Not all moving companies charge the same. Be sure you clearly understand how you are being charged. Are you being charged by the hour or by the weight of your shipment? Also, find out about additional charges like fuel surcharges. These charges can be a flat rate or a percentage of your final bill.

It is always a good idea to get at least three quotes but, be careful, the most inexpensive company isn’t always the best. If you are not sure how much your move is going to cost or how long it will take ask for an on-site estimate. This is the best way to be certain. A reputable moving company will be happy to come to your home or office to give you a bid.

A little bit of research will help you pick the best moving company for the job!

Over the years, the following questions have been asked most often, and we have useful answers to help you prepare for your move:

1) Can I leave items in my dresser drawers?

It is fine to leave clothes in your dresser drawers. However, you should pack in boxes items that could break. Items of intangible value such as money or jewelry should always be taken out of dressers and moved by you personally.

2)   Can movers take cleaning supplies on the truck?

Movers are not allowed to move cleaning supplies. These items should be moved by you,  given away, or left with the house.

3)   Can the movers disconnect or reconnect my appliances?

It is your responsibility to disconnect and reconnect gas and electric appliances. This is important in case there are any problems such as a leaky faucet or a broken turn-off valve. You will be able to notify a plumber immediately if you are aware of the problem. Gas needs to be shut off prior to disconnecting or reconnecting a gas appliance.

4)   How do I move my clothes and shoes?

Clothes on a shelf or shoes in a closet should be boxed.  Clothes on hangers fit nicely into wardrobe boxes which are 4’x2’x2’ and include a hanging rod.  It is best not to put shoes in the bottom of these boxes. You can usually use these boxes free of charge from your Utah movers on the day of your move.

5)   Can movers take my household plants?

For local moving, large floor plants can be moved on the truck if there is room. Any plants that sit on a desk or a table should be moved by you.  For long-distance moving,  plants can go on the truck to most states except for California. However, moving plants in a truck is not guaranteed.

A little bit of planning to move these items can make your moving day go a lot easier!

Summer Moving Tips

Summer is the busiest time to move and most people have outside furniture and grills that need to be moved also. Here are some tips to help you move these items:

  • Barbeques:  Movers are not allowed to move propane tanks. You can either move them yourself or leave it and purchase a new one.  If your grill has a  grease catcher  be sure to empty it. Natural gas barbeques should be disconnected prior to moving. Charcoal barbeques need to be cleaned out before moving day.
  • Patio Furniture:  Of course patio tables can be moved. Chairs that cannot be stacked like rod iron ones will have to be moved individually, but stack all others.
  • Hot Tubs: These can be moved but usually require extra men. Be sure it is drained and clean prior to move day.  Sometimes it is more economical to check with the store where you purchased it to see if they can move it for you.
  • Propane Heaters: These need to be disconnected prior to move day. Remember, propane tanks cannot be moved by movers.
  • Fire Pits: Need to be cleaned out before moving day.
  • Firewood: Movers can take firewood, if it is boxed.
  • Igloo Clay Fire Pits: They need to be cleaned out prior to moving day. If they have been used a lot, they can be brittle.
  • Outside Flower Pots:  Movers can certainly move these but be aware older clay pots can break easily. Containers that are already planted can also be moved locally, but there are restrictions for plants being moved long distance.
  • Fountains: Movers can move these, but they need to be disconnected and drained prior to move day.

A little preparation will make moving your outside furniture efficient and cost effective.
