5 Long Distance Moving Tips

Moving Tips  |  156 Comments

If you are looking to move out of the state,  plan ahead!loading and moving

The following tips are a good place to start:

1) Get at least three moving companies to come to your home and give you a quote.

A reputable moving company will want to see your shipment and give you a written bid. Always get an on site estimate!

2) Find out what coverage options are available to protect your shipment.

Moving companies all carry 60 cents per lb. coverage, but you can also purchase additional coverage.

3) Decide if you want to pack yourself or have movers pack you.

Have your estimator figure this into your bid. Packing yourself will save you money, but what you pack will not be protected. So, consider having your shipment professional packed. It might be worth it.

4) How soon do you need your shipment delivered after it is loaded?

This might play a role in which moving company you choose. Moving companies vary in delivery spreads depending if they are shipping your goods alone or with another shipment. If your shipment is going by itself, it should be able to be delivered quickly.

5) Schedule your move at least 7 – 10 days in advance.

Be sure you secure Utah Movers at least a week in advance especially if you are moving at the end of a month which is the busiest time to move.

Moving Tips  |  182 Comments

Your child moving to college and that can be an exciting and challenging experience.
Are you able to get everything into a pick up truck and move it yourself or will you need help?

A few suggestions if you need help from moving professionals:

1)Is your child moving to college with a friend?

Sharing a moving truck with one or more people will save on costs.college moving
Hiring a moving company can save you time especially if you are moving into an apartment with flights of stairs.

2)  Plan ahead

If you need to hire movers, plan ahead. Moving companies book up for the end of the month.
Be prepared when you call with a list of what you need moved, addresses for loading and unloading, and contact phone numbers.
If your child is going to pack themselves, be sure everything is packed and ready to go.
Boxes should be enclosed and not weigh more than 50 lbs each.

3)  Packing

Plastic storage bins are great for college kids. Shallow ones fit nicely under their bed for additional storage.
When they move back home, it keeps everything clean and easy to find.
Helpful hint: label what is in your storage containers so you know exactly what you have stored in them. This will be helpful when it comes time  to move out again in the fall.

4)  Take what you need

If your child is sharing a dorm or an apartment with another person, find out what they are bringing so to avoid having double items. College students really only need the basics.
This will save on moving costs too!

Utah movers are happy to move college students. Find
a company that specializes in local moving to get your best deal.

3 Considerations When Choosing a Moving Company

Moving Questions, Moving Tips  |  325 Comments

There are many questions to consider when researching the moving company that will move your belongings. Here are a few of the most important ones:

1)   Reputation Matters

A good moving company values their reputation. A good reputation means that people refer their friends and family to them and customers will use their services again and again. Ask your friends and neighbors who moved them and what kind of experience they had with their Utah movers.

You should also find out how long a company has been in business.  It is best to choose a company who has been in business long enough to establish their reputation as honest, fair, reliable, and most  importantly, customer service oriented. New moving companies haven’t had time to build their reputation.

2)   Customer Service

An important aspect to consider when choosing a moving company is their customer service. You can get an idea about this when you initially call and talk to them. Do they answer their phone right away or do you have to go through a  call center?Moving company sales representative

Also, does the moving company have a physical location or are you really calling a broker? Brokers will book your move and then hire the job to be done by a company that you might not even know.

What about after your move? Will you be able to get a hold of someone at the company if you have questions or problems?

These are all good customer service issues to consider when looking for a moving company.

3)   Pricing

Not all moving companies charge the same. Be sure you clearly understand how you are being charged. Are you being charged by the hour or by the weight of your shipment. Also, find out about additional charges like fuel surcharges. These charges can be a flat rate or a percentage of your final bill.

It is always a good idea to get at least three quotes but, be careful, the most inexpensive company isn’t always the best. If you are not sure how much your move is going to cost or how long it will take ask for an on-site estimate. This is the best way to be certain. A reputable moving company will be happy to come to your home or office to give you a bid.

A little bit of research will help you pick the best moving company for the job!

The 5 Most Frequently Asked Moving Questions

Moving Questions, Moving Tips  |  253 Comments

Over the years, the following questions have been asked most often, and we have useful answers to help you prepare for your move:

1) Can I leave items in my dresser drawers?

It is fine to leave clothes in your dresser drawers. However, you should  pack in boxes items that could break. Items of intangible value such as money or jewelry should always be taken out of dressers and moved by you personally.

2)   Can movers take cleaning supplies on the truck?

Movers are not allowed to move cleaning supplies. These items should be moved by you,  given away, or left with the house.

3)   Can the movers disconnect or reconnect my      appliances?

It is your responsibility to disconnect and reconnect gas and electric appliances. This is important in case there are any problems such as a leaky faucet or a broken turn off valve. You will be able to notify a plumber immediately if you are aware of the problem. Gas needs to be shut off prior to disconnecting or reconnecting a gas appliance.

4)   How do I move my clothes and shoes?

Clothes on a shelf or shoes in a closet should be  boxed.  Clothes on hangers fit nicely into wardrobe boxes which are 4’x2’x2’ and include a hanging rod.  It is best not to put shoes in the bottom of these boxes. You can usually use these boxes free of charge from your Utah movers on the day of your move.

5)   Can movers take my household plants?

For local moving, large floor plants can be moved on the truck if there is room. Any plants that sit on a desk or a table should be moved by you.  For long distance moving,  plants can go on the truck to most states except for California. However, moving plants in a truck  are not guaranteed.

A little bit of planning to move these items can make your moving day go a lot easier!

Summer Moving Tips

Summer is the busiest time to move and most people have outside furniture and grills that need to be moved also. Here are some tips to help you move these items:

  • Barbeques:  Movers are not allowed to move propane tanks. You can either move them yourself or leave it and purchase a new one.  If your grill has a  grease catcher  be sure to empty it. Natural gas barbeques should be disconnected prior to moving. Charcoal barbeques need to be cleaned out before moving day.
  • Patio Furniture:  Of course patio tables can be moved. Chairs that cannot be stacked like rod iron ones will have to be moved individually, but stack all others.
  • Hot Tubs: These can be moved but usually require extra men. Be sure it is drained and clean prior to move day.  Sometimes it is more economical to check with the store where you purchased it to see if they can move it for you.
  • Propane Heaters: These need to be disconnected prior to move day. Remember, propane tanks cannot be moved by movers.
  • Fire Pits: Need to be cleaned out before moving day.
  • Firewood: Movers can take firewood, if it is boxed.
  • Igloo Clay Fire Pits: They need to be cleaned out prior to moving day. If they have been used a lot, they can be brittle.
  • Outside Flower Pots:  Movers can certainly move these but be aware older clay pots can break easily. Containers that are already planted can also be moved locally, but there are restrictions for plants being moved long distance.
  • Fountains: Movers can move these, but they need to be disconnected and drained prior to move day.

A little preparation will make moving your outside furniture efficient and cost effective.
