There are a few basic questions you should ask your moving company before you agree to move in order to avoid a scam.
1) Can they give you an on site written estimate?
Legitimate moving companies will always be able to provide you with a written estimate. If they can’t, then keep calling other companies. There are many “broker” moving companies who only book your move and then hire the job out to local movers. It is best to work with the same moving company through all stages of your move. This way you know exactly who to contact if you have any questions or problems.
2) Does the moving company have a physical location where their office, storage, and trucks are located?
Again, this will help you determine whether you are hiring an actual moving company or just a broker. You should ask where their office is located. Are you talking to a call center or an employee of that company? Also, ask what name is on the truck that will be loading your shipment?
3) Is the moving company licensed?
Ask to know their DOT number (Department of Transportation) and their MC License number (Motor Carrier.) If they don’t have these numbers, they are not a legitimate or actual moving company.
4) Do they have competitive rates?
Always get at least three estimates. If you have one estimate that is unreasonably low, be careful. Some companies will bid low and then add on additional charges while you are being moved.
5) Do your Utah Movers have a website, facebook, or blog that will give you more insight into who they are?
Do your research on the company you are hiring. Their social media outlets will tell you a lot about their company. Don’t forget to find out how long they have been in business!
Just a few basic questions will let you know right away if you are working with a legitimate moving company. Unfortunately, there are some companies that are not what they claim to be and therefore, do not provide the services you are expecting.
